Trakošćan Castle is located near Varaždin in northern Croatia. Built in the 13th century, the castle’s name is thought to have come from the Ancient Thracians.

The castle was a family estate for centuries before being nationalized in 1944. It became a museum in 1954.

If you’re in the neighborhood, pack a picnic and enjoy a view of the castle from the lake.
