Garbage Import Bans Gain Steam

Malaysia is the latest country to ban trash imports from developed countries. It is time to ratify the Basel Convention.

A smoldering pile of garbage.

The solution to the world’s trash problem is to make it easier to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

As more governments begin to recognize the soil and water damage from accepting other people’s garbage, developed nations will increasingly need to address the issue at home.

By adopting the principles of a circular economy, we will be healthier, happier, and richer.

If you’re in the United States, call your members of congress to demand that the U.S. enact legislation and ratify the Basel Convention.

The governments of 187 countries have signed it. The U.S. is just one of two countries that have not.
