Once a year, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) sets aside a special day to recognize tourism’s contribution to economic growth around the world.

For today’s celebration, the theme focuses specifically upon how tourism promotes community development.

Over the past few weeks, my wife and I have been working with a brilliant and driven tourism entrepreneur in Southern Moldova named Constantin Furtuna, who is helping to foster community development in his village of Rosu, on the outskirts of the city of Cahul.

Having converted his family home into a hostel, Constantin is now positioned to be a key layover point on the travel circuit between Bucharest, Romania, and Moldova’s capital of Chisinau.

It also means that the village of Rosu will be where travelers get their first impressions of the country of Moldova.

With homes decorated in traditional Moldovan styles and bunches of grapes dangling from ubiquitous vines, the community of Rosu is a perfect introduction to this relatively undiscovered Eastern European land.

Constantin is working with his neighbors to prepare tourism packages that include tasting local wine, eating traditional cuisine, and interacting with native Moldovans.

As a result, the influx of tourists will hopefully help to stimulate the local economy and promote sustainable community development.

On this World Tourism Day (#WTD2014), a salute to Constantin Furtuna and his fellow Tourpreneurs who are helping to improve the lives of those in their community through tourism.
