Edible Art: The Fresh Market of Modena, Italy

Ancient Rome knew about the treasures at Modena’s fresh market. Today, it continues to dazzle. Here is a short video featuring delights from Emilia-Romagna.

Outside the city of Modena in northern Italy, you’ll find an ancient Roman road dating back over 2,000 years.

The stones of the road have deep grooves carved into them.

My guess is these ruts are from carts laden with fresh produce bound for Modena’s fresh market.

A Bounty of Fresh Delights

Modena lies at the heart of the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy.

The region is a rich and fertile land producing a cornucopia of culinary treats, including:

  • Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
  • balsamic vinegar
  • bubbly red Lambrusco wine

And the Modena fresh market features them all.

Tricia and I had an incredible set of experiences in and around this prized Italian city.

The edible art at Modena’s fresh market was one of our favorites.

Tricia’s blog post offers a more in-depth look at the fresh market.
